The one they should have published

The Globe seems to limit me to one letter per month max, so they did not publish the following becuase I already had one published last month, but I think they should have: It was on a day they were talking about the need to exercise fiscal restraint -- i.e. cut government spending: It was titled:

Fiscal Restraint Alone Won't Work -- Morally or economically.

Yes, it is a good idea to start thinking about fiscal restraint. But there are two sides to fiscal policy -- one is spending our money and the other is collecting it, through taxes and other means. At a time when millions of Canadians are victims of the economic crisis, it is economically blinkered, and morally deficient that many of us, our governments, and both your editorial today and Jeff Simpson, fail also to propose that we who are fortunate enough to still have jobs, pensions, investments, and houses should do our bit and share the pain through higher income or wealth taxes. We are all in this together. Simply cutting public services doesn’t cut it. Lewis Auerbach, Ottawa.
